Kurono is an x86_64 operating system written from scratch in C++ and assembly, with its own kernel, drivers, filesystem, TCP/IP stack, compositing desktop, scripting language and Type 1 hypervisor. There is no Linux kernel underneath it. The kernel implements the Linux system call interface, so unmodified Linux programs such as Firefox run on it. It boots on real hardware, including a recent Core Ultra 7 laptop, where USB input, NVMe, Ethernet, USB audio and 8 CPU cores work. It is early and still rough, and the current work is making it reliable on modern machines.
