formulas is an open-source, vendor-independent spreadsheet calculation engine for Python. It parses, compiles, and executes spreadsheet formulas and workbook models without requiring Microsoft Excel or the Excel COM server, and already supports .xlsx, .ods, and portable JSON workflows. Its long-term goal is to provide an open calculation runtime that can reproduce spreadsheet semantics across Microsoft Excel, LibreOffice Calc, Apache OpenOffice Calc, and other spreadsheet ecosystems, allowing models to run consistently in servers, cloud services, automation pipelines, scientific workflows, and reproducible applications without dependence on a proprietary spreadsheet runtime. The current Excel compatibility suite implements 483 of 536 tracked functions (90.1%). Several major categories already have complete coverage, while the DATABASE category remains a clearly identified gap at 0 of 12 functions. Public package statistics report more than 20 million cumulative PyPI downloads, and the project has nearly 500 GitHub stars. Funding will be used to close high-impact compatibility gaps, implement the full Excel DATABASE-function family, substantially expand ODS/OpenFormula and LibreOffice/OpenOffice compatibility, and create a cross-engine conformance suite that continuously compares formulas and workbook results across spreadsheet implementations. The intended outcome is durable open infrastructure for portable spreadsheet computation rather than a clone of a proprietary user interface.
