Freedom of the Press Foundation

Organisation
Freedom of the Press Foundation (FPF) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to protecting and defending public interest journalism. FPF builds and maintains open-source security tools that help journalists and whistleblowers communicate securely, provides digital security training to media professionals, documents press freedom violations, and engages in advocacy for the protection of journalists' rights.

Dangerzone is an open-source tool that empowers journalists, activists, and others to safely open potentially malicious documents without putting their devices at risk. Dangerzone converts PDFs, Microsoft Office files, and images into secure, sanitized PDFs using isolated Linux containers. This ensures that even if a document contains hidden threats – such as embedded tracking mechanisms, malicious scripts, or exploits targeting software vulnerabilities – it is neutralized before being opened. Support from FLOSS would allow FPF to sustain and improve Dangerzone, ensuring it remains a reliable tool in an evolving digital landscape where secure document handling is critical for press freedom and public-interest reporting.
