Terma Heritage Foundation, Inc.

Terma Heritage Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that builds the open-source software infrastructure for Tibetan — a language that is "low-resource" not for lack of speakers but for lack of tooling. For over a decade, now under the Foundation, we have shipped and maintained a suite of free, open-source tools so Tibetans can read, write, type, search, and study in their own script — work no one else is doing at this scale. The tools are in real use: a word processor with a 239,000-entry offline dictionary (TermaType), browser tools for working in Tibetan (TermaFoundry), a searchable knowledge graph of 557 Buddhist deities (TermaVision), and a free library of 1,067+ Tibetan texts — alongside education and culture programs that have reached over a million children. We are effectively the sole maintainer of a critical, neglected area of FOSS: the digital plumbing for a 1,300-year-old writing tradition. This funding sustains that maintenance — the ongoing, unglamorous work of keeping these tools working, compatible, and free for a community whose basic digital-language needs are otherwise unmet.
