Funds about two days per week of maintenance for libheif and libde265: triage and fixing of security reports, fuzzing, security releases, keeping up with the ISO/IEC 23008-12 specification, and platform/compiler support. This is the amount that would move security work from weekends into regular working hours.

A scoped, one-time project: systematic hardening of one subsystem (box parser, image sequences, uncompressed codec, derived images), extension of the fuzzing corpus and harnesses, and a security release. Deliverables and scope are agreed in advance.

Implementation of HDR Gain Maps in libheif, including reading and writing Ultra HDR JPEG images. A gain map stores an SDR base image together with the information to reconstruct the full HDR image, so that photos render correctly on both SDR and HDR displays. This is the HDR format that current iPhone and Android cameras produce; the project gives libheif-based applications access to these photos and interoperable conversion between HEIC, AVIF and Ultra HDR JPEG.

Implementation of GPU hardware decoding in libheif for one of the two main image formats, HEIC or AVIF, using the video decoding hardware built into common GPUs. Offloading the decoding speeds up viewing of large and tiled images considerably, frees the CPU for the application, and lowers energy consumption. This benefits image viewers, photo management applications and services that display or thumbnail large numbers of HEIC/AVIF images.
