map3d turns any area of OpenStreetMap into a 3D city model in the browser. Users select an area on a map, map3d fetches buildings and roads from OpenStreetMap, builds the scene with React Three Fiber, and exports a GLB file for Blender, Unity, Unreal or three.js. It is free, needs no account, and runs at https://map.fleet.im.
Usage (GitHub, 7 Nov 2026): 2,682 stars and 434 forks. About 2,350 of those stars came in the last 12 months, and around 200 still arrive each month. In the last 14 days the repository had 857 unique visitors, with Google as the top referrer. Issue reports come from users mapping cities in Africa and the Middle East.
What funding sustains:
1) Stop leaning on volunteer infrastructure. map3d queries the public Overpass API and the OSM standard tile servers directly from the browser. We will run our own Overpass instance and cache tiles, as the Overpass and OSMF tile policies ask of apps that serve more than OSM mappers.
2) Global coverage. Fix failures for cities in Africa and the Middle East, missing roads, and buildings exported as plain boxes.
3) Finish the open roadmap: terrain (heightmap), height overrides, textures and materials.
4) Exporter and docs: import guides for common 3D tools, OSM attribution embedded in exported files, tests and regular releases.
