As part of a larger project to transition RISC OS away from being written in hard-to-maintain AArch32 assembly language to make it more portable, the built-in BBC BASIC interpreter has been identified as a key component to be replaced. BBC BASIC has been a constant presence in RISC OS since the very early Acorn computers of the late 1980's, and as a result there is a huge back catalogue of programs written for it: everything from simple helper scripts to entire desktop applications. By rewriting the interpreter itself to be portable we will immediately have available both a popular dialect of BASIC, plus all of that back catalogue, and in addition be able to more easily extend the language in future with features such as structure declarations and large integers. Our funding target is 25000GBP.
